This is far from an entry-level animal care job," he said. "I've worked animal jobs that are entry level. Those salaries, he says, don't account for the amount of expertise that's required to do the work, especially for those working with animals. Thompson says Medieval Times performers in Lyndhurst usually start at minimum wage, and don't go much higher. 'She is not beholden to anyone': Meet the 1st queen of Medieval Times. The theatres are designed to look like 11th-century castles, and the performers dress in elaborate costumes and play the roles of knights, kings and queens.Ĭustomers eat a facsimile of medieval-style food, sport paper crowns and guzzle beverages from goblets as they watch a live performance of horseback-riding, jousting, sword-fighting and falconry. Medieval Times is a Middle Ages-themed dinner theatre company based in Irving, Texas, with nine locations across the U.S. Spooked horses and 'overserved customers' Neither AGVA nor Medieval Times responded to requests for comment from CBC. Thompson and his fellow animal handlers and performers will vote on July 15 on whether to join the American Guild of Variety Artists (AGVA), a union that represents performers at theatres and theme parks, including Disneyland. We're all very passionate about it," Thompson told As It Happens guest host Ginella Massa. "But just with working with live animals alone, that adds its own dangers into the mix. That's why he and his colleagues are working to form the dinner theatre's first union at its location in Lyndhurst, N.J. But he'd enjoy it a lot more if the job came with higher wages and better safety protocols. Labor unions are not always knights in shining armor.Purnell Thompson enjoys working at Medieval Times. However, in the private sector, unions can compel employees to pay, even if they receive no visible benefit from union representation. AFSCME decision that public-sector workers - employees who work for a government entity including a school district - cannot be forced to pay fees to a union. What this means for the employees is that they gained nothing from striking for nine months, collective bargaining will resume, and they have to pay dues to AGVA as a condition of continuing to be employed at Medieval Times.Ĭalifornia is not a right-to-work state, which means employees can be forced to pay dues or fees to a union as a condition of their employment, if their workplace is unionized. How California’s school ‘dashboard’ obscures poor academic performanceįacing a potential vote by the Buena Park employees to remove the union as collective bargaining agent, AGVA called an end to the strike, making an “unconditional offer to return to work.” The striking employees were out of work for nine months. Performances continued during the strike. A strike is an effort to deprive the company of revenue by depriving it of the services of its workforce. In this case, the company brought in performers from its other locations to replace the roughly 30 striking knights, nobles and squires. They claimed that management had given pay increases to employees at its non-union locations, while the employees represented in collective bargaining by AGVA were left out in the cold.Ĭollective bargaining offers no guarantees of pay increases or improved working conditions. On February 11, the employees began an unfair labor practices strike. In November 2022, the employees at the Buena Park location voted to unionize and join the American Guild of Variety Artists. It operates a chain of ten dinner theater venues that feature actors and stunt performers in a show centered around knights on horseback in a jousting tournament. Medieval Times Entertainment is a privately held company based in Texas. However, the experience of the employees of Medieval Times in Buena Park is a cautionary tale that warns against hubris and overreach by union leaders. An August survey by Gallup found that the percentage of Americans who think unions will become stronger in the future than they are today rose from just 19 percent in 2018 to more than a third in 2023. Labor unions have applauded this year’s “summer of strikes” and an unusually high number of work stoppages as a sign of the resurgence of organized labor in the private sector.

I’m generally fiercely against throwing away good things just because something more appealing comes along. I’ve pampered it for 9 years, never dropped it, hardly scratched it. I just feel sorry by the thought of retiring a perfectly good and healthy piece of kit. The whole point of choosing subscription over perpetual is to keep receiving bug fixes and new features down the line. Will I be able to continue using the final Big Sur LrC release as long as I keep paying for my Adobe subscription? Your subscription price shouldn't be more than you're previous selling price. I'm sure you've spent enough time studying this, and you have a reason for the pricing, but I don't think you've taken into consideration the aspects I've mentioned. I don't see the real benefit of the subscription model to your application, the backend service you're providing isn't worth the price you're asking. Add to it the ability to use those apps on multiple devices, including smartphones, tablets, computers, and even smartwatches. Those apps use a far more complicated, highly secured backend cloud than what your app would. Many other companies charge between $1 and $4 for the same service depending on the features. However, $24 a year is a price you would pay for something like a password manager (I pay $24/Year for Roboform, which is one of the good ones. It's unfair to create an app and keep releasing measure updates for free. I understand that as a developer, you need a steady income, and I completely support the idea.
